Gender-Affirming Medical Care Assessments

Overview

Some medical pathways require documentation to access gender-affirming care within current clinical and legal frameworks.

You deserve care that respects your identity, autonomy, and lived experience.
My role is to support you through these pathways and provide documentation that meets relevant requirements—without unnecessary barriers.

What is a gender-affirming assessment?

A gender-affirming assessment is a collaborative process that supports access to gender-affirming care where required within current clinical and legal frameworks.

It focuses on understanding your experiences, needs, and goals, rather than assessing whether your identity is “valid.”

These assessments are sometimes requested as part of gender-affirming medical care pathways (such as gender-affirming hormone therapy or surgery).

This process is approached in a way that is transparent, respectful, and aligned with your individual goals.

What this can support

Assessments may support access to:

  • Pubertal suppression

  • Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT)

  • Informed consent review (if requested by a prescriber)

  • WPATH-aligned surgical letters (top, bottom, and other procedures)

This work is informed by:

  • WPATH Standards of Care Version 8 (SOC8)

  • AusPATH

  • Australian Standards of Care for Trans and Gender Diverse Children and Adolescents

  • Relevant legislative requirements

Who seeks assessment

People who:

  • require documentation as part of a medical or legal pathway

  • have been asked by a prescriber or surgeon to complete an assessment

  • want support understanding and navigating next steps

What to expect

Most assessments involve:

Initial Appointment (90 mins)

Understanding your experiences, context, and goals for care

Follow-up sessions (if needed)

Clarifying details and preparing documentation

Report / letter

Prepared in line with current clinical and legal requirements

Timeframe

Most assessments are completed over 1–3 appointments, with reports typically provided within 2–3 weeks of the final session.

Approach

The purpose of this assessment is not to determine whether someone is trans or gender diverse.

It is to:

  • support access to care within existing frameworks

  • centre your lived experience and autonomy

  • support informed decision-making

These assessments are:

  • gender-affirming and autonomy-focused

  • collaborative and transparent

  • focused on access, not gatekeeping

Within NSW, pathways can at times be complex.
My role is to help you navigate these requirements clearly and collaboratively.

Fees

  • Initial Appointment (90 mins): $380

  • Additional sessions (60 mins): $260

  • Report writing: $260/hour (typically 1–2 hours)

  • Feedback session (optional): $260

No more appointments will be scheduled than are needed to meet the goals of the assessment.

Important information

  • Assessments are provided via secure telehealth across Australia

  • Psychologists do not prescribe medication or provide medical advice

  • Final treatment decisions remain with your treating medical provider

Reports

Reports are prepared in line with WPATH SOC8 and AusPATH guidance.

They are written to support:

  • continuity of care

  • communication with your treating provider

  • access to required medical pathways

Some providers require specific diagnostic terminology.
Where this is necessary, it is approached in the least pathologising way possible while meeting requirements.

If your provider has specific documentation requirements, these can be discussed during the assessment process.
